Programme managers: What can security incident information do for you and your programmes?

Improve your decision-making process by better managing and using incident information in your daily-work.

Security-related incidents put the lives of aid workers and aid recipients at risk in addition to disrupting the flow of assistance to disaster-affected populations. When security incident information from international and local NGOs is pooled together, we can leverage this information to analyse trends that inform programme decision making, guide access strategies and support internal and external advocacy. Incident information can also be used to provide an evidence base for funding strategies and project cycle planning to support programme management decisions.

Aim of the training:

This course aims to enable senior managers to make effective programme management decisions that are evidenced by security incident information and analysis, ultimately maintaining access to populations in need, throughout the project cycle.

Who is this training for?

This course is suitable for Programme Directors, Programme Managers and other senior staff who have direct involvement in developing, supporting and managing programmes and projects. Suitable participants will be interested in how to effectively leverage incident information and analysis to create and sustain access, at all stages of the project cycle.

Objectives of the training:

• It is anticipated that participants who successfully complete the training will be able to:
• Identify how incident information and analysis can be an enabler (and an inhibitor, if incorrectly used) of effective programming
• Identify and contrast sources of incident information in terms of accessibility, validity and value
• Examine how incident information and analysis can be utilised in different project stages of the project cycle (e.g. preparedness, assessment, bid/programme design, inception and access, implementation, monitoring, evaluation).
• Compare security incident information and analysis against organisational risk thresholds
• Identify how security incident information and analysis can inform strategic decision making.

Participants will also be able to:

• Use tools and mechanisms to analyse data, spot trends and ultimately inform successful programme delivery
• Promote good incident information management to leverage organisational buy-in for programme design initiatives and encourage funding for security activities
• Recognise how the analysis of incident trends can be used to minimise programme disruption
• Identify how incident information management can be applied to guide access discussions with donors
• Demonstrate their learning by applying the principles of information management and SIIM tools to a case study in a group activity.

Learning methods:

This 3-hour training will be split into three 45 minute sessions, with a 15-30 minute break between sessions 1 and 2. This format encourages participants to reflect and apply their learning using tools and by taking part in a group case study exercise.

3 hours, 1pm - 4 pm on the 13 February and 13 March 2018. Select one date.

Session content, discussions, polls and multiple choice questions with group work will reinforce participant’s knowledge, skills and competencies on: collection, reporting, recording, analysis, use, and sharing of incident information.

• Training and reading material will be provided 2 weeks before the training commences

Cost

The SIIM project is funded by EU Humanitarian Aid and the training is provided free of charge. You simply need to have a good internet connection during the online webinar and a commitment to complete the pre-reading tasks.

Link with the SIIM project:

This course forms part of the broader programme on Security Incident Information Management (SIIM) project funded by ECHO. The project has included the development of the SIIM handbook, training and coaching for Security Focal Points as well as this series of trainings on incident information and analysis for other technical specialists within the sector. The aim of these trainings within the broader project is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the importance of security incident information across the organisation and allow all types of staff to be able to identify the information that is useful and access the information and analysis they require to fulfil their roles.

The programme is linked with the incident database run by Insecurity Insight which allows NGOs to share incident information between organisations at a global level, allowing for improved analysis for evidence based decision making.
